Christianity is maturing all over the world, and people are getting commissioned to do what they were created for. This has great significance to the world around us. Cherie and I can see the line we crossed just a few years ago, when we were working toward entering into what God had promised us and spoken to us about.

When we did cross over, we had another whole series of learning processes—that I want to share—from this wonderful but very intense season.

In this season Cherie and I, and many of you, are learning about what comes after the battle. Here are five lessons we learned about starting to live in the promised land:. Sometimes you can have an expectation that when you start to do the things you were made for, you will know exactly what to expect because you have been there before in some way, but no!

Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? You have to be in dependence on God or you could miss the joy of the connection and learning that comes with the new. Sometimes we can sacrifice this joy by trying to keep our know-it-all attitude. Give me land, large tracts of land. God gave him what he asked for. Be a good follower. Remain in the presence of the Lord. Joshua was one of the twelve spies whom Moses sent from the wilderness into the land of Canaan to spy out the land, and from Num.

Their protection has been removed from them, and the Lord is with us; do not fear them. Then the glory of the Lord appeared in the tent of meeting to all the sons of Israel.

Note that even Moses was excepted from going into the land of Canaan because he had sinned against the Lord when instead of speaking to the rock in order for the Lord to make water come out of it that he instead in anger at the stubbornness of the people hit the rock. We read in Deut. It is believed that Joshua wrote the last chapter of the book of Deuteronomy and then wrote also the book of Joshua.

Connecting People to Purpose

Summary of the message to us from the first six books of the Bible:. Erroneously, many have thought that the book of Joshua symbolized heaven for the believer , and there are some hymns that reflect this, however the book of Joshua is not a book about rest in the Lord, such as will be ours the true believer in Christ in heaven, rather it is a book that is full of battles wherein the people of God have been told to go out and to conquer a land that has been given to them.

Outside the USA?

This promise was first made to Abraham in Genesis chapter 12 , and then again to Isaac , and yet again to Jacob. Furthermore, it was only by possession of the land of Canaan that the promise to Abraham could be fulfilled. The land of Canaan then actually belonged to the Israelites as their possession, however they had to go and conquer the land in order to realize the blessing of possession of the land. So then, we Christians have been given many promises however, in order for us to in truth receive the blessing of them in our lives, we must in faith claim and appropriate them , just as the Israelites were given the promised land of Canaan as their possession and yet they had to go in and conquer the inhabitants of the land in order to take possession of that land.

Will tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? This first chapter of Joshua shows the preparation that was to be made before the children of Israel went into the land of Canaan to take up their inheritance, by conquering the enemies in the territory that God had given them. Just like the children of Israel are commanded in this chapter as their preparation for taking their inheritance, so we Christians must:. Make provisions for this new walk, and count the cost.

Resolve in our hearts and minds that we are not going to look to the left or the right, and there will be no retreating. We must be willing to burn the bridges to our prior life just as the children of Israel would not be able to go back across the Jordon River after God parts it for them to walk through , and start walking in faith and obedience to the Lord keeping our eyes focused upon Him.

Moses , whom Joshua faithfully served, symbolized the law and thus he could not qualify to lead the people into the land of Canaan.

The Promised Land…

The law is the standard of right and wrong , however it is flawed for it does not impart the desire to do what is right nor the power to do so. Moses, as the symbol of the law, failed to be obedient to the Lord when he in anger struck the rock for the water to come out for the people to drink, instead of speaking to it as he had been told by the Lord to do.

Thus, Moses had to die before Joshua could be called to lead the people into the promised land. Just as the Red Sea had to be crossed for the Israelites to escape the land of Egypt , the Jordan River had to be crossed in order for the children of Israel to take possession of their land. The crossing of each required faith on the part of the Israelites in the promises of God.

The Israelites never claimed much of the land that was given to them. The borders of the land given to them by the Lord went as far north as above modern day Syria and as far south as into northern Africa. We Christians do not have to battle up until we reach the place of victory, we stand in the place of victory through the cross and blood of Christ of Calvary , and thus we can only battle down from that place of victory that is ours as part of our birthright as Christians!

It is a restorer of vision. On it you shall not do any work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your ox, nor your donkey, nor any of your livestock, nor the foreigner that is within your gates, so that your male servant and your female servant may rest as well as you" Deut. When we enter into the greater promises on our lives, we also begin to walk in an atmosphere of rest from warfare and from drama. The more mature we get, the more capacity we have to carry graciousness and wisdom.

Relational conflict, politics and drama just don't slow us down or cost us time. Also, we learn how to let God fight our battles so that we can stay focused on the joy of intimacy with him and partnering with his purposes. Whether you are in the midst of growing pains, a battle or occupying God's promises, we pray that God meets you in his extravagant love this month.

May his presence surround you and resource you!
